Bluebirds

Marvelous birds to capture in your binoculars, male Eastern bluebirds are a brilliant royal blue on the back and head, and warm red-brown on the breast. Blue tinges in the wings and tail give the grayer females an elegant look. Eastern blue birds can be seen in my area year round, especially in the country. But for years, they never came close enough for me to enjoy them.  I knew they were not usually seed feeders, so I put out mealworms, supposedly their favorite, in hopes of enticing them to come closer, but without success. One day I decided to treat my seed-eating visitors with no waste (hull-free) seed. Later I looked out, shocked to see five bluebirds on that feeder! I’m not sure just what it was in the mix that they preferred, but after that experience I kept filling the feeder with the no waste seed, and the bluebirds kept coming back. They were so beautiful that whenever one lit on the feeder, everything seemed to stop … and all I could do was admire the beauty.
