Gone Fishing

Paul & Me in Costa Rica
Paul Catches Mai Mai
Paul and I stayed at Golfito Sailfish Rancho in Costa Rica for a week and and had the adventure of a lifetime. Not only was the rainforest setting breathtaking, but we each caught our first sailfish. Our adventures are always about more than just fishing. We have built a close friendship by combining and sharing a passion for travel and deep sea fishing. I started out "being a good sport," thinking I was going to hate it. Was I ever wrong!
Lest you think I catch all the fish, I took this picture of Paul landing a Mahi Mahi. He's a skilled angler and has taught me everything I know. He's also the one who typically handles the fish--which isn't my thing! I'm easily lured into fishing with him because he takes care of the details: travel arrangements, accomoda- tions, tackle, boat, captain, mate— absolutely everything we need. All I do is pack my clothes and a blow dryer and off we go. He makes it easy!

Fairbanks, Alaska
Cobra Explorer II
Now THIS is adventure! Paul chartered a sea plane in Fairbanks, Alaska, and we flew to Minto Flats, a wilderness area about 50 miles away. The pilot dropped us on the shore with this rickety old boat and some decent fishing tackle and said he'd be back to pick us up at 6:00 PM. We had a blast out there--saw all kinds of wildlife, including bears and a moose--and we caught a boatload of Northern Pike. I'd never do this stuff if Paul didn't coax me. But I'm always glad I did.
On a warmer note, we sometimes enjoy our fishing adventures aboard a small yacht like this one, the Coiba Explorer II, which can house a dozen anglers and offers private air-conditioned rooms and baths--also provides three wonderful meals a day. This vessel serves as our mothership, and we use a private fishing boat with a captain and a mate for our daytime outings. I'm NOT into roughing it, so Paul always manages to find accomodations that keep a smile on my face.
