From Kathy’s Heart…
Summer 2007

“Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, since as members of one body
you were called to peace.”  Colossians 3:15

Summer is usually an active time of year that flies by too quickly for me. It’s not that I’m especially fond of the Texas heat, but I’m enthralled with nature and love being outdoors. I rarely turn down a chance to go boating, fishing, or bird watching. And most of the time my husband and I have some sort of summer vacation adventure planned. Not this year. Back in mid-February, my orthopedic surgeon confirmed that my right hip prosthesis was failing—again. I could hardly believe I was facing a third surgery on that hip, especially since I haven’t been able to walk since the second surgery (just four years ago).

I was referred to a doctor who specializes in revision and reconstructive surgery. He ordered a 3D CT scan of my hip and is having a specialty lab fashion a custom prosthesis, which takes time. So for all these months, I’ve been obediently observing a sedentary “holding pattern,” while awaiting the arrival of the made-to-order prosthesis and my July 25 surgery.

During this time of being restricted, I’ve focused on my writing and have been able to accomplish a great deal. But I also learned that sometimes it takes a conscious choice to let peace rule in my heart. Anxious feelings still compete for my attention, especially since the doctor isn’t saying I’m going to walk again. But when I pause to consider that the very God who calmed the wind and the sea indwells me, I’m able to put my anxiety under His authority—and let peace rule.

The Latest On My Books

Ever Present Danger, the first Phantom Hollow novel, was the number one new release for the entire chain of LifeWay stores after its launch in April. It’s gaining speed, and I’m continuing to get positive—even touching—feedback from reviewers and readers who love the story.

Never Look Back

Book two, Never Look Back,is scheduled to release in October. I LOVE THIS STORY. If you’d like a sneak preview, you can read the prologue and first chapter on my website. Those of you who read the first book are going to get pulled deeper into Ivy’s saga in this second offering. Never Look Back has more twists and hairpin turns than a mountain road and will keep you guessing till the end.

I’m just about to finish the editing on The Grand Scheme, the third and final Phantom Hollow novel (Pub date April 2008). I’ll have it posted on my website in the next few months and will include the prologue and first chapter.

I think the Phantom Hollow Series is my best yet. If you’re missing your favorite characters from Baxter and Seaport, try immersing yourself in the world of Ivy Griffith! I doubt it will take you long to form an attachment to her and the other characters in the Colorado town of Jacob’s Ear

Recent Events

I’ve been involved in several national radio interviews to promote Ever Present Danger, as well as a live in-studio interview with KVNE here in my area. Studio interviews are just plain fun! Mike Harper and Dan Bolin were gracious hosts, and we had a marvelous time.

Also, on the Saturday before Father’s Day, I did a special book-signing event at the LifeWay Christian stores in Tyler and Longview, Texas. It was great fun meeting fans from all over East Texas and introducing Phantom Hollow to new friends.

What’s On the Horizon?

I just finished writing a book proposal for a Tennessee trilogy and hope to have a contract in the next few months. The setting is a small town called Sophie Trace, which sits in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains. I think I’ve developed a great storyline for the first novel in the trilogy and can hardly wait to get started. Watch for more information in the near future.

At the Hermans’ House…

All of our kids and grandkids were here a couple weeks ago—a first in a very long time since. For me, that special gathering was the HIGHLIGHT of this entire year.

Till Next Time…

In closing, I want to thank each of you for supporting my writing ministry. Your enthusiasm, encouragement, and accounts of how God has used my stories to bless you are truly humbling. I pray you have a safe and fun summer!

In Him,

Kathy
